Unfortunately the plane body had scratch marks on the bottom and was kot polished smooth.
The is no functional issue, it works for my tasks but the quality is definitely not comparable to Veritas planes.
It's a real pleasure to work with this tool, chopsticks are very easy and fun to make !
i use the HP-8 Mini to plane Kumiko strips to thickness. it works great.
great tool!!!
Works as advertised, but two issues:
1) All three movable "flaps" have different movement resistance. 1:6 flap moves really easily, 1:8 pretty hard and 90 degree "flap" somewhere in between. Does not affect usability of the item, but does affect the feel. Its a 80€ thing after all
2) There is a hinge right at the edge of the flaps, so you cannot draw a line right to the edge. The other line does come to the edge, yes, so there is a way to compensate for that.
It's an OK tool, but not as good as the price tag suggests.
Wise use of Stainless Steel and Hard Coating where Corrosion and Wear is one of the actions in degrading Workshop tool Life and Quality.
Lovely (very)small block plane. High quality plane, nicely packed. I like that the plane's mouth is adjustable. Very satisfied.
It's a stunning plane, I've bought the bridge city squares, and will get the other planes too. But the pricing on the website is misleading - it stated 72, which became almost 120 after taxes and shipping were added, the product page did not seem to indicate taxes were excluded. Please just quote with taxes.
I was tired to find the center of mullion to make tenons. This tool eases the process and save precious time as a weekend warrior.
The Bridge City HG-4 honing aid is more sculpture than tool. Not that you can't achieve excellent results with it, but this tool is so beautiful and so perfectly finished that you don't even want to use it, because every scratch, every little trace of use is a nuisance.
If you free yourself from such thoughts, sharpening chisels, plane irons etc. becomes a real pleasure. The angles can be set precisely, nothing rattles and everything is well thought out. Everything? No, unfortunately not! Unfortunately, the small threaded grub screws for fixing the stop angle on the underside of the tool rest are not secured against unscrewing and can therefore easily be lost. What's more, we would like to see a "key garage" for the Allen key supplied, as this also runs the risk of getting lost in everyday use. Even a relatively simple modification in the form of a knurled screw, similar to the one responsible for the angle adjustment, only much smaller, could provide a remedy here - with a short thread and a short hexagon socket. After tightening the two threaded threads, this wrench with knurled head could be "parked" in a threaded hole in the bracket or one of the other knurled screws.
In direct comparison with the Veritas sharpening system II, which is also not ugly, it is noticeable that its handling is somewhat easier thanks to the attachable quick setting gauge. The only drawback here is that two knurled nuts have to be tightened to secure the iron to be sharpened. However, if these are fixed and the angle on the gauge is set correctly in advance, there is no need for the somewhat cumbersome gauging using a separate angle gauge. Optional accessories can also be used to remove angled irons and those with a slight curve. When you then realize that the price of the Veritas sharpening system, even with these options, is still significantly lower than that of the HG-4, the decision becomes a question of faith. Oh, if only it wasn't so beautiful!
